Dancing Queen

This week I went to the gym to get my weight-lifting on, and one of my favorite regulars was there. Since I go to a small gym, I see a lot of the same people every time. This lady is one I always look forward to seeing, because when she runs on the treadmill, she dances. She has her headphones in, she moves her arms to the music, and she really gets into it. There are a few reasons why I admire the Dancing Queen:

Reason 1: She doesn’t care who is watching her. She just gets on the treadmill and does what she needs to do.

Too many times while working out, I have caught myself wondering what I look like to the people around me.  I try not to worry about it, and because I’ve been going to the same gym for months now, I usually don’t feel self-conscious anymore. But sometimes when I see a new person, the thought still crosses my mind. Dancing Queen is about the least self-conscious person I’ve ever seen at the gym, and it’s refreshing.

Reason 2: She is having fun. She’s getting in shape and having a blast doing it.

When I started exercising, it was hard, not fun. It was a necessary evil. Only recently did I start having fun while working out, especially running (although I still don’t think I’m having as much fun as she is). I even look forward to working out now, and it makes the workouts go quicker when I enjoy them. I like that the Dancing Queen isn’t allowing her gym time to be a drag, and she isn’t trudging through her workout. She clearly has a positive attitude and is enjoying herself.

Reason 3: She’s entertaining.

Honestly, it’s just fun to watch other people have fun, especially in an atmosphere where people tend to be quiet, focused, and sometimes scary. When the people around me are lifting weights with grunts and scowls, and the walkers on the treadmills are plodding along, fixated on the TVs overhead with blank stares, it’s uplifting to see someone getting her groove on with a smile on her face.

Thanks, Dancing Queen.
